Another recent project was “The Overlake School: Celebrating 50 Years.” A keepsake book, it included every bell and whistle; dustjacket, special stamp, printed endsheets, special paper, foldout centerfold timeline. It was an honor to work on a project intended to serve as a time capsule for the future students and teachers of Overlake School. Continue reading Overlake School History

Memoir, “Hear Me”
The recent memoir “Hear Me” was an exploration into a woman’s childhood education and upbringing, and how it influenced her choice to unconventionally educate her own children. It was a joy to work with Betsy Bergquist on this heartfelt life story. Cover images went down several paths before we settled on using an image from Betsy’s own childhood, her 5-year-old self holding a bird just … Continue reading Memoir, “Hear Me”

Mexican Fiesta Table
Exploring Mazatlan last year exposed me to a kaleidoscope of vivid colors and fresh foods. Inspired by the culture, the cuisine and the marketplace with its luscious fruits and heaps of camarones, I decided to design a modern Mexican cookbook. Continue reading Mexican Fiesta Table

Golden cover printing
Gorham Printing has found a great supplier for gold printing in Olympia Copy and Print. Not only was this memoir a fun design, the gold finish really makes it pop. The limited palette of red, black, and white was a compliment to the shiny gold. Can’t wait to see it with the gloss lamination! Continue reading Golden cover printing

Travel Memoir
This travel memoir called for a fun cover with a humorous feel. The author has spent many years traveling to all parts of the globe and has all kinds of stories to tell. An enjoyable cover to design! Continue reading Travel Memoir

Pacific Railroad History
The story of Seattle’s own railroad, this book features over 160 photographs, maps, extensive archival documentation, and employee interviews. A definitive account of one of the West Coast’s most significant railroads. I’ve been fortunate to work on many railroad history books, including Rails to Paradise: The History of the Tacoma Eastern Railroad 1890-1919 and Remembering When: Memories of the Great Northern Cascade Division and Beyond. … Continue reading Pacific Railroad History

Fiction Dustjacket
Recent fiction dustjacket for a mystery set in Savannah, Georgia. The author wanted an edgy but historical look. The shadowy figure lent itself to an off-kilter type treatment. A fun design to work on. Continue reading Fiction Dustjacket

Always Gardenia
This hardcover book is an homage to the novels of Barbara Pym. Combining the author’s husband’s silhouette drawing with a lively flat-color background resulted in a feminine dustjacket design. Author Betsy Hanson was fortunate to be interviewed by Nancy Pearl for her Book Lust feature, check out the interview. Continue reading Always Gardenia
